Highlights from the 2024 NAIDOC Family Fun Day in Bundaberg
Welcome to our NAIDOC Week 2024 celebration recap!
We were excited to collaborate with CQID (Bundaberg) and were immensely supported by PCCC Connected Beginnings, Gidarjil Development Corporation, Shell's QGC business, the National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA), and the Department of Treaty, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships, Communities, and the Arts to organize an unforgettable NAIDOC Family Fun Day & Playgroup on Friday, July 12. On a bright Thursday in Bundaberg, families gathered for an enriching experience at the NAIDOC Family Pop-up Play Day, celebrating culture, connection, and creativity as a part of NAIDOC Week, designed to enhance awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures while providing a fun-filled day.
From the moment participants arrived, the atmosphere buzzed with laughter, music, and the joyful sounds of children at play. Multiple interactive stations offered diverse cultural experiences where families engaged in activities and stalls that illuminated the rich histories of First Nations peoples. Kids participated in creative arts and crafts inspired by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage, allowing them to express themselves while learning about local culture.
A highlight of the day was the Bunda Bar'aggi Dancers, who engaged school students in traditional dance and language workshops. Families also joined in games that encouraged not just physical activity but also teamwork and communication, emphasizing the significance of connection within First Nations communities and the importance of bonding with each other and the land.
The event was more than just play; it also served as an opportunity for local services and performers to highlight their offerings and showcase their talents. Attendees enjoyed captivating dance performances and music that echoed the spirit of the community, creating a beautiful blend of sound and movement that united everyone.
The day was infused with joy and pride as we celebrated this year’s theme, "Keep The Fire Burning! Blak, Loud & Proud." We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone involved—performers, volunteers, attendees, and sponsors—for contributing to the event's success. Together, we honor the profound culture and contributions of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and invite you to help us keep the fire burning until next year! 🔥
Events like these underscore the importance of celebrating diversity and striving for reconciliation. The NAIDOC Family Pop-up Play Day stood as a beautiful tribute to the strength and resilience of First Nation communities, highlighting the vital role each person plays in fostering a harmonious and inclusive society. As Bundaberg looks forward to next year’s NAIDOC week, there is hope that the spirit of connection and celebration will continue to thrive, inspiring families to come together, learn, and grow in unity.
We want to extend a huge thank you to everyone involved - from the performers to the volunteers, attendees, and sponsors.
